Material Requirements For Wire Thread Inserts

The material selection for wire thread inserts (also known as wire thread sleeves or threaded sheaths) needs to be determined based on the specific application requirements for strength, corrosion resistance, temperature range, and non-magnetic properties. Common materials and their characteristics are as follows:

 

304/A2 Stainless Steel: Made of aerospace-grade material conforming to SAE AS 7245 standards, it features high strength (tensile strength up to 1400 N/mm²), excellent corrosion resistance, and hardness (RC 43–50). It is suitable for temperature environments from -200°C to +325°C and can withstand temperature shocks up to 425°C. It is the most widely used general-purpose material.

 

316/A4 Stainless Steel: Manufactured according to UNS S31600 standards, it has better corrosion resistance than 304 stainless steel and is particularly suitable for marine and seawater environments prone to galvanic corrosion. Its tensile strength also reaches 1400 N/mm², and its applicable temperature range is -200°C to +300°C.

 

Phosphor bronze: A non-ferrous copper-tin alloy conforming to BS EN 12166 standards. It features a low coefficient of friction, good elasticity and anti-adhesion properties, and a tensile strength of approximately 1100 N/mm². Suitable for applications requiring non-magnetic properties, such as precision instruments, with a temperature range of -200°C to +300°C.

 

Inconel X-750: A precipitation-hardening nickel-chromium alloy with excellent corrosion resistance and a tensile strength up to 1600 N/mm². Suitable for extreme temperature environments (-200°C to +550°C) and can withstand high-temperature impacts of approximately 700°C. Commonly used in high-end fields such as aerospace.
